The Green Belt to the north west gives the village a sharp edge. There have been two breaches of it - one to build the new primary school and one to accommodate the giant Coca-Cola bottling plant on the Junction 41 industrial estate. School playing fields, the park and Alverthorpe Meadows help to preserve its separateness on the southern side.
Wrenthorpe is on the edge of an urban area and as most of the available land has been taken up by housing, small pockets are being filled in and farm buildings have been converted into mews type homes and large houses are becoming homes for the elderly. Not surprisingly then environmental issues are a regular occurrence. The more desirable Wrenthorpe becomes as a place to live the more pressures there are on the environment, including the common ones of litter, traffic, and pollution of the becks. Wrenthorpe Environmental Society, now an established community organisation has been active in monitoring these matters and in improving our surroundings since 1989. |
